Description This artwork was originally accompanied by notations at the outer edge of the border giving three personality aspects of people born under each zodiac sign in accordance with standard practices in astrology. These presumably were meant to be typeset with the design upon publication. For example, a person born under the sign of Taurus is said to be “considerate, helpful, inventive.” Pisces are “independent, fearless and freedom-loving.” The apparent reason for the outer wheel of zodiac signs corresponding to the inner one of planets is that astrology relates zodiac signs and planets by assigning each sign a ruling planet that influences its characteristics. In astrology personality traits are said to be determined by the placement of constellations in specific positions relative to the Earth at the time of a person’s birth, which then assigns a zodiac sign and element to them. Each zodiac sign is grouped into one of four elements — Fire, Earth, Air, or Water — which are believed to impart distinct, overarching characteristics to people born under them. For instance, fire signs are considered passionate and energetic, while earth signs are seen as grounded and practical. The artwork design is rendered consistent with aspects of so-called psychedelic art. For example the illustrations, though based on classical mythology, have an Art Nouveau-influenced style often employed in 1960s and 1970s art. Other aspects of psychedelic art employed in this work include use of a full spectrum of vibrant and contrasting colors that are somewhat clashing as well as the overall intricacy of the complicated design, all with the net effect of being visually strong if not somewhat overwhelming. In addition, consistent with psychedelic art of this period, the fonts of the text names are distorted in size and form within irregular shapes. Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, handling wear. Issued in two sheets, now professionally joined on the back with mulberry paper by professional restorer. Small circular mylar overlay with names of planets. Some minor stains from former tape joining on the back showing through the front, particularly in the margins, can largely be matted out when framed.
