The larger silver plate on the bottom reads “Methil Bowling Club 1905. Presented by Wm. Mitchell Esq. President. Won by Robert Porteous.” The smaller plate on the top is engraved with the number “2” (either referring to the number of the ball in a set, or an award for 2nd place). Above and below the “2,” the ball itself is inscribed “R.G. Lawrie, Glasgow, Number 3 Bias, Scottish Bowling Association.” A 1906 record online at the Fife Cultural Trust lists a Robert Porteous in Methil, whose profession was bootmaker.
