Please inquire as to rates, mentioning the name of this item in the email. A neoclassical rhyton cup, in the form of an ancient mythological griffin head, and with a handle. The antimal head is realistically modeled with open beak and upraised tongue; its elongated ears distinguish it as a griffin rather than an eagle. Rhyton cups were popular in ancient Greece, though the design is thought to have first been developed earlier in the Near East. They were for drinking or pouring liquids, often as part of a ceremony. The rhyton form was popular for decorative arts in the neoclassical period of the late 18th and early 19th century, including ceramics. Condition: Generally very good, nicely patinated, noting a small fracture crack in the handle. Later mounted for display on a wooden shield shaped plaque.
